Swing into spring with these home maintenance tips
Depending on where you live, spring can be a bit fickle. As you wait for the snow to melt, it’s a great time to get a head start on your spring home maintenance and repairs. Here are some home maintenance tips that will help protect your most valuable asset.
As snow and ice melts, this can cause damage to our roofs and eaves. Ice dams are a common problem that can cause significant damage to eavestroughs, and if not properly cleared, can lead to water damage inside your home.
Safety first! When in doubt, contact a professional. To access your roof, place your ladder directly on the ground. To remove an ice dam, start by clearing some of the snow from your roof, careful not to impact the roof directly. Using a mallet or shovel, gently break up the debris. You can also use calcium chloride, a chemical deicer, to melt the dam. Don’t use regular rock salt as this could damage your roof.
Starting at the top, make sure your roof hasn’t sustained any damage over the winter. Look for missing or curled shingles that may indicate your roof has reached the end of its life.
Check your foundation and call in a professional if you notice any suspicious cracks or changes.
If you have a pool, keep an eye on the water level. Winter weather can damage the structure, liner, and lines. If you suspect there may be damage, call a professional to assess and repair.
